Врач-физиолог; поэт, эссеист. Один из "бостонских браминов" [Boston brahmins], выпускник Гарвардского университета [Harvard University], позднее его профессор, декан медицинского факультета [medical school]. Как поэт прославился в студенческие годы, выступив за сохранение фрегата "Конститьюшн" [Constitution, U.S.S.] в стихотворении "Старик-железный бок" [Old Ironsides] (1830). Основные особенности прозы - свободные, бессюжетные повествования, насыщенные афоризмами, игрой слов и т.п. С 1857 в "Атлантик мансли" [Atlantic Monthly] выходят его эссе под общим названием "Самодержец утреннего застолья" ["The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table"], содержавшие дерзкие выпады против религиозных устоев. В последний период творчества писал мемуары, создал ряд "медицинских романов", опубликовал биографии Дж. Мотли [Motley, John Lothrop] и Р. У. Эмерсона [Emerson, Ralph Waldo] и других крупнейших деятелей американской культуры и науки. В 1910 избран в Национальную галерею славы [Hall of Fame]. Отец юриста О. У. Юрист, государственный деятель. После Гражданской войны [Civil War] адвокат, преподаватель конституционного права в Гарвардском университете [Harvard University] (1870-71), главный редактор журнала "Американ ло ревью" [American Law Review] (1870-73), председатель Верховного суда Массачусетса (1899-1912). В 1902-32 член Верховного суда США [Associate Justice of the Supreme Court]. Как лидер его либерального крыла заслужил уважительное прозвище "великий инакомыслящий" ["the great dissenter"], отражающее роль, которую он сыграл при рассмотрении Верховным судом [Supreme Court, U.S.] дел "Локнер против штата Нью-Йорк" [Lochner v. New York] (1905) и "Хаммер против Дагенхарта" [Hammer v. Dagenhart] (1918). Его особое мнение в деле "Эбрамс против Соединенных Штатов" [Abrams v. the United States] (1919) вошло в историю как мощный аргумент в защиту свободы слова. Среди научных трудов - "Общее право" ["The Common Law"] (1881). В 1965 избран в Национальную галерею славы [Hall of Fame]
